In the summer of 1967, the Coast Guard contracted a company to demolish Windmill Point lighthouse. About that time, a Dr. Wallace Atwood was constructing a marina at Windmill Point, and he offered the contractor $2,000 for the lighthouse in hopes of reassembling it on land at his marina. However, the lighthouse was dismantled in such a fashion that he was unable to do so. He then planned to display the cupola, but gave up those plans after it was severely vandalized. However, he was able to salvage the fog bell, and it is now on display at the marina on the water side of the tiki bar. The fog bell from Windmill Point Lighthouse is now on display at the Windmill Point Marina in White Stone, Virginia. (Lighthouse Digest archives photo by Betty Collins.)
