This newspaper clipping from the Staten Island Advance newspaper dated Saturday, July 1, 1939 ran with a photo headline “To Fly Proudly No More.” The image shows Quartermaster Ernest Clothier removing the pennant flag of the U.S. Lighthouse Service from the lighthouse tender Sumac. The caption stated, “The ship, together with seven other St. George based tenders and eight lightships, henceforth will fly the flag of the Coast Guard. . . .” (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
