John “Jack” J. Short climbing the stairs at Chicago Harbor Lighthouse on August 7, 1939 on the first National Lighthouse Day under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Coast Guard. John “Jack” J. Short started as the 3rd assistant keeper at Chicago Harbor Lighthouse in 1935. He became the 2nd assistant keeper in 1939 and the head keeper in 1942 a position he held until 1948.
