Serving as the 1st assistant keeper from 1948 to 1965 and then as the head keeper from 1965 to 1968, Homer R. Meverden was the last official lighthouse keeper of the Big Sable Point Lighthouse. A long time veteran lighthouse keeper, he had joined the U.S. Lighthouse Service in 1936 as an assistant keeper at the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal Lighthouse. He then went on to serve as a keeper at the Plum Island Range Lighthouse and then at the Skillagalee Lighthouse from 1938 to 1941. In 1939, while at Skillagalee Lighthouse, he joined the U.S. Coast Guard when the U.S. Lighthouse Service was dissolved. He also previously served as a keeper at the Grays Reef Lighthouse from 1941 to 1943, Beaver Island Lighthouse from 1943 to 1945, and Seul Choix Point Lighthouse from 1945 to 1949.
