American frontiersman Burr Caswell (1807-1896), who was the lighthouse keeper at Big Sable Point Lighthouse from 1874 to 1882, was the first white man to occupy any part of Mason County, Michigan. His second wife, Sarah, was his 1st assistant keeper at Big Sable Point Lighthouse. When Burr and Sarah Caswell left Big Sable Point Lighthouse, they moved to Mitchell, South Dakota to operate a hotel. Around 1892, the couple moved back to Ludington, Michigan where he died in 1896. Burr Caswell was buried next to his first wife in the Lakeview Cemetery in Ludington, Michigan.
