According to Assistant Superintendent Merrill’s written report, “All that remained of the derrick was the bottom end of the two stiff legs which were anchored into the solid rock. One of the anchorages, 3” in diameter eyebolts, and 3 feet long pulled loose, crumbling the rock around the anchor bolt.” (Courtesy Coast Guard Historian.)
