Photo Caption:

Six feet of the rock overhang broke off during the storm and plummeted into the sea. Assistant keeper Henry Jenkins believed the resulting cataclysmic wave, throwing boulder fragments from the fractured rock, were what shattered 16 storm glass panes in the lantern and swept the derrick away. What is left of the overhang in the photo shows a stress crack in the protective cement cap that had been applied more than three decades earlier. The Tender Manzanita awaits the return of the inspection team far off in the distance. (Courtesy Coast Guard Historian.)
