Bringing supplies on board the Hiram to Alaska’s Cape Spencer Lighthouse was no easy task, especially when the water was rough. Since Cape Spencer Lighthouse did not have a boat ramp, the small boat from the Hiram, loaded with supplies and two crewmen, had to be lifted up to the lighthouse by the boom at Cape Spencer. Because the seas always seemed to be rough, timing was important when hooking up to the boom on arrival, as well as unhooking upon departure. One false move could cause the boat to flip over in the water with the loss of supplies and possibly even the loss of life.
